Big 12 Tournament Tiebreaker Procedures
Official Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's and Women's Basketball Championship Seeding Guidelines.
Seeding Overview (16-Team Bracket Format)
The Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship uses a 5-round ladder featuring all 16 conference member institutions:
- Seeds 1 through 4 (Double-Bye): Receive an automatic bye directly into Round 3 (Quarterfinals).
- Seeds 5 through 8 (Single-Bye): Receive an automatic bye into Round 2 (Second Round).
- Seeds 9 through 16: Play in Round 1 (First Round matchups: 12 vs 13, 11 vs 14, 10 vs 15, 9 vs 16).
Two-Team Tiebreakers
The following hierarchy determines seeds when two teams finish with identical conference records:
- Head-to-Head: Results of regular-season head-to-head competition between the tied teams.
-
Record vs Highest-Placed Team: Each team's winning percentage versus the team occupying the highest position in the final regular-season standings, continuing downward until an advantage is achieved.
*(Note: 2-0 is not better than 1-0 or 0-0; 0-0 and 0-1 is not better than 0-2).*
- Conference Road Record: Comparison of tied teams' conference-games-only road winning percentage.
- Conference Road Record vs Highest-Placed Team: Road winning percentage versus the team(s) occupying the highest position in final standings, counting downward.
- Draw: Random virtual public draw as the ultimate decider.
Multiple-Team Tiebreakers (3+ Teams)
When three or more teams finish with the same conference record:
-
Mini Round-Robin Head-to-Head: Collective winning percentage among the tied teams in head-to-head play.
- If reduced to 2 teams during this process, revert to the Two-Team procedure starting with head-to-head.
- If more than 2 remain tied, repeat mini round-robin among the subset.
- Record vs Highest-Placed Team: Winning percentage against the highest-seeded non-tied teams in order of finish.
- Conference Road Record: Conference-only road winning percentage.
- Conference Road Record vs Highest-Placed Team: Down through standings.
- Draw: Public lottery draw.
